Vol. 484 No. 3

Written Answers. - Cardiac Units.

Alan Shatter

Ceist:

250 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Health and Children where the new cardiac surgery unit, or units, will be situated in view of the fact that it was indicated a decision would be made before Christmas 1997; the costs involved in the new unit or units; when it or they expect to be operational; the number of procedures expected to be undertaken each year; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22267/97]

The provision of additional cardiac surgery facilities is a matter of national importance and one which will require significant capital and revenue investment over the next few years. The question of the provision of cardiac care services overall is currently under review. However, I hope to be in a position to bring my proposals to Government in this regard in the very near future. An announcement will then be made on the location of additional cardiac care services.
