Vol. 484 No. 3

Written Answers. - Motor Taxation.

Brendan Howlin

Ceist:

265 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the total sum collected in motor taxation in 1996 and to date in 1997; the total sum allocated to local authorities from this fund to date in 1997; the amount, if any, which remains to be allocated; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22138/97]

A sum of £267.5 million has been allocated to local authorities under the funding system provided for in the Local Government (Financial Provisions) Act, 1997. It is not possible to be precise at this stage about the extent of additional moneys over and above this amount which will become available to be allocated to local authorities. This will depend on the level of motor taxation collected in December.

The total net amount of motor tax collected — i.e. excluding administration costs etc. — in 1996 was £259 million. The net amount collected to the end of November 1997 was £261.5 million.
