378 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will double the level of budget to an adult literacy and basic education body (details supplied) in view of the case made by supporting organisations. [22337/97]
The recent OECD report on adult literacy in Ireland gives cause for concern. My Department will be considering the issues raised in this report, but, as an immediate response, I am increasing the provision for adult literacy by £2 million, for 1998. This is almost a doubling of the 1997 allocation. I will continue to increase funding in this area as resources become available.
