Vol. 484 No. 3

Written Answers. - Tesco Supermarkets.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

113 Mr. Durkan asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if her Department has received any complaints in respect of the Tesco supermarket chain particularly in relation to access for Irish suppliers regarding various products; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [22306/97]

I am not aware of any specific complaints in relation to access for Irish suppliers to Tesco Ireland.

As the Deputy is aware, at the time of the take-over of the Quinnsworth-Crazy Prices chain, Tesco gave a number of written undertakings to the Government. At a recent meeting, Tesco's chief executive and his Irish management team assured me they would abide not only by the letter but also by the spirit of the undertakings they have entered into. In meeting its commitment to adopt a development approach to fostering new and emerging Irish suppliers, the role of Tesco's Irish trade development director is dedicated to increasing the amount of products purchased from Irish producers for both the Irish and wider European markets.

Forbairt is in regular contact with Tesco about its purchasing requirements with a view to identifying opportunities for Irish suppliers. It is also working closely with An Bord Tráchtála and An Bord Bia to assist Irish suppliers develop their competitive capability and maximise their sales.
I have closely monitored all aspects of Tesco's undertakings and will continue to do so.
