Vol. 484 No. 3

Written Answers. - Job Losses.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

120 Mr. Durkan asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment whether she has satisfied herself at the number of job losses arising from firms which have been involved in mergers or takeovers in the past; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [22315/97]

In many mergers, rationalisation of operations is central to achieving the goal of becoming more efficient and competitive, particularly at a European and international level. The cost savings necessary to achieve these objectives often require short-term job losses but this must be seen in the context of the long-term objective of enhancing employment within a more efficient combined operation.
