230 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Health and Children the number of births during 1996 in each of the hospitals (details supplied); and to indicate the proportion of patients who were in the medical card category in each case. [23015/97]
The number of births during 1996 in each of the specified hospitals is set out in the following table. Since a full range of public maternity services are available entirely free of charge to all women, the medical card status of the mother is not directly relevant in the context of service provision. For this reason, comprehensive statistics on the proportion of maternity patients holding medical cards, as distinct from the public-private status of the patients, are not readily available.
