The current development plan for the food industry is articulated in the Food Sub-Programme 1994-99. This provides a comprehensive range of supports covering capital investment, research and development, marketing and promotion, and human resources. The overall objective of the sub-programme, which is aimed at both large and small enterprises, is to build a competitive food industry which will generate national wealth and employment while helping to sustain rural economies. The sub-programme forms part of the operational programme for industrial development. Food companies can also avail of a number of other transectoral measures in the operational programme.
An Bord Bia has responsibility for the marketing and promotion element of the food sub-programme. The board is fully aware of the important contribution which quality Irish cuisine can make to the development of markets for our food products. In recognition of this, it liaises closely with the restaurant sector and, whenever possible, undertakes appropriate activities in conjunction with the sector.
The future needs of the food industry are currently being examined and will be the basis of a new post-1999 development plan. While it would be premature to engage in speculation as to the supports that might be available under that plan, the aim will be to ensure that the industry's contribution to the overall economy continues to be maximised.
