Vol. 486 No. 2

Written Answers. - Offshore Accounts.

Thomas P. Broughan

Ceist:

104 Mr. Broughan asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if she will be investigating the recent allegations concerning so-called offshore moneys in National Irish Bank; and when she will be in a position to send a report, if necessary, to the DPP. [2313/98]

The allegations to which the Deputy refers are currently the subject of investigation by the Central Bank and the Revenue Commissioners. My Department's responsibility is to ascertain whether any breaches of insurance or, possibly, company law has occurred. In that regard my colleague, Deputy Treacy, Minister of State at the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment, has sought clarification from National Irish Bank on a number of points and he has asked for an urgent response to these matters. Pending the nature of the replies to the points raised in his letter, it is not possible to anticipate at this time, what further action the Minister might have to take in the future discharge of his functions under the Insurance Acts and/or the Companies Acts.
