Vol. 486 No. 2

Written Answers. - Register of Fishing Vessels.

Cecilia Keaveney

Ceist:

105 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources whether a person (details supplied) in County Donegal will be given a response in relation to his eligibility for an ITC certificate; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2264/98]

The person referred to has applied to have a vessel entered on the register of fishing vessels, and has queried the measurement by my Department's Marine Survey Office of the vessel's tonnage. The vessel is between 12 metres and 24 metres in length and, in accordance with the established rules, its tonnage falls to be measured under the terms of the Oslo Convention. Measurement of the vessel was carried out by the Marine Survey Office on this basis and has, following representations from the person concerned, been rechecked and confirmed. My Department will be communicating with the person concerned in this regard shortly. Measurement in accordance with the International Tonnage Convention applies only to vessels over 24 metres in length and could not, therefore, be applied to the vessel in question.
