Vol. 486 No. 6

Written Answers. - Paedophile Register.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

62 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the proposals, if any, he has to introduce a measure which would bring about a lifelong monitoring of the activities of all convicted paedophiles in view of the fact that there is convincing evidence that they reoffend. [3005/98]

Liz McManus

Ceist:

108 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform when the promised discussion document on a register of convicted paedophiles will be published; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3118/98]

Willie Penrose

Ceist:

109 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform whether work on the discussion paper on sexual crimes is completed, in view of press comments regarding his intention to establish a paedophile register; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3199/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 62, 108 and 109 together.

The discussion paper on sexual offences being prepared in my Department is nearing finalisation and I expect to be in a position to publish it shortly. Among the issues being addressed in the paper will be issues raised by the establishment of a register of convicted paedophiles and the question of the post-release supervision of convicted paedophiles.
