Vol. 487 No. 4

Written Answers. - Certificates of Origin.

Breeda Moynihan-Cronin

Ceist:

57 Mrs. B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the plans, if any, she has to protect the name "chamber of commerce" given its use by a non-existent chamber recently to assist in an alleged beef scam investigated by the EU Court of Auditors which has cast a slur on a local business community. [4098/98]

I am currently reviewing the system for the issue of certificates of origin in the light of the incident referred to by the Deputy. My Department has had consultations with the Chambers of Commerce of Ireland and is working towards an agreement with them involving a tightening up of procedures and the placing of the system on a firmer statutory basis. I expect to have a revised system in place by mid-year.
