Vol. 487 No. 4

Written Answers. - Job Creation.

Ceist:

60 Dr. Upton asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the action, if any, she is taking to install a replacement industry at a company (details supplied) in north Dublin and the counselling and placement advice, if any, she has offered to the almost 400 staff made redundant in December and January 1998. [4107/98]

Since the announcement of its closure with the loss of 296 jobs, management at Applied Magnetics has been extremely proactive in organising placement services for employees. The company recently facilitated other multinationals in the locality by permitting them to carry out interviews with employees on site. Due to the nature and level of employee skills, which are currently very much in demand, it is expected that the workers will be successful in securing alternative employment with other overseas companies in the area.

The facility, which is owned by Applied Magnetics, will be jointly marketed by the company and IDA Ireland. It is envisaged that this facility, which is in a desirable location, will be acquired by either an existing company in the industrial estate for expansion purposes or by a new investor who is seeking to establish an operation in that area.
