Vol. 487 No. 4

Written Answers. - Company Takeovers.

Emmet Stagg

Ceist:

61 Mr. Stagg asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if she shares the concerns expressed recently in relation to the takeover on 20 January 1998 of a pharmacy (details supplied) by an English company (details supplied) and the measures, if any, she is considering to assist small Irish suppliers following the arrival of so many British multiples. [4099/98]

I am aware of the concerns expressed regarding the takeover referred to and assure the Deputy that I will follow developments closely. In this regard, Forbairt and An Bord Tráchtála, development agencies directly under the aegis of my Department, are working closely with Irish companies to help them to build up their capability and competitiveness. The objective is to ensure that where possible Irish companies supply not only Irish stores, but also help these companies develop their sales in overseas markets.

The agencies are also in regular contact with major retailers, including the UK company in question, about their purchasing requirements with a view to identifying opportunities for Irish suppliers.
