Vol. 487 No. 4

Written Answers. - Electricity Generation.

Enda Kenny

Ceist:

130 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the current cost per therm of electricity produced in each generating station in the country; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [4384/98]

The information requested is commercially sensitive and it would not be appropriate to provide such data, particularly with the emergence of competition in the electricity market in Ireland. In general terms, however, the cost per unit varies considerably from station to station and is dependent on such issues as technology, fuel type, staffing levels and age of plant. As an example, the older peat stations with their lower thermal efficiency and their higher manpower to capacity ratio would tend to be far more expensive per unit than say a modern combined cycle gas fired plant.
