Vol. 487 No. 6

Written Answers - Special Criminal Court.

John Gormley

Ceist:

284 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will give details of the recent review undertaken into the workings of the Special Criminal Court; the way in which and when this review was undertaken; the persons who were consulted; the conclusions of the review and the basis for the decision that the court should continue in operation. [4636/98]

A review of the need for the Special Criminal Court was carried out in the 1997 by the Government, which decided that there was a continuing need for the court in the light of the prevailing security and crime situation, including the level and extent of organised crime in this jurisdiction.

The review was conducted by my Department, which consulted with relevant State agencies. The Government is keeping the need for the court under regular review.
