Vol. 487 No. 6

Written Answers - Nuclear Safety Committee.

Emmet Stagg

Ceist:

132 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if the Committee on Sellafield and the Irish Sea has met; the programme of work drawn up for the committee; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [4882/98]

A new Ministerial Committee on Nuclear Safety was established recently. The new committee has been named the Ministerial Committee on Nuclear Safety to reflect its broad terms of reference which encompass all matters relating to nuclear safety and radiological protection as well as the ongoing campaign against Sellafield.

The committee will give added impetus to the Government's campaign against Sellafield. It will review other issues concerning radiological protection such as the national emergency plan and measures necessary to protect the public and workers from the effects of ionising radiation in respect of medical, research and industrial applications.

The commitee, which had its first meeting on 5 February 1998, is chaired by me. The following Ministers are members of the committee: Deputy Molloy, Minister of State to the Government and the Department of the Environment and Local Government, Deputy Byrne, Minister of State at the Department of Marine and Natural Resources, Deputy Moffatt, Minister of State at the Department of Health and Children, Deputy O'Donnell, Minister of State at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Dan Wallace, Minister of State at the Department of Environment and Local Government.

In addition to the above, the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland and officials from the relevant Departments and the Attorney General's office are represented on the committee.
