Vol. 488 No. 1

Written Answers - Abattoir Hygiene Costs.

Michael Ferris

Ceist:

117 Mr. Ferris asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the cost to small abattoirs to fully implement EU Regulation 91/497/EEC and EU Council Directive 95/23/EC as referred to in the recent Adjournment debate on this subject. [5607/98]

Any costs which might arise for abattoir owners in meeting the standards set in the Abattoirs Act, 1998 (Abattoirs) (Amendment) Regulations, 1988 will depend on the specific hygiene conditions which apply in individual abattoirs. Standard operating procedures have been drawn up which will ensure that any costs involved for small abattoirs slaughtering less than six livestock units per week will be minimised.
