Vol. 488 No. 1

Written Answers - Prisoner Releases.

John Gormley

Ceist:

240 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will consider the release date of a person (details supplied) in County Cork who is currently a prisoner in Cork prison. [5662/98]

I am aware of the person to whom the Deputy refers but it is long standing practice not to comment in detail on the case of an individual prisoner and I do not propose to make an exception to that practice in this instance. I can, however, advise the Deputy that where early release for an offender is being considered a number of factors are taken into account. These include the purpose for which the release is sought, the nature of the offence committed by the prisoner, the amount of the sentence served, behaviour while in custody and any potential risk there might be to the public.
