Vol. 488 No. 1

Written Answers - Duty Free Sales.

Brian O'Shea

Ceist:

48 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Finance the contact, if any, he or his officials have had with the British Presidency of the EU in relation to the abolition of duty free sales or any other matter. [5569/98]

As part of the preparations for the UK Presidency my officials discussed the issue of the abolition of duty free sales with their UK colleagues. Officials have also spoken to the UK Presidency at working group meetings held since 1 January 1998.

I plan to raise the duty free issue with the Chancellor of the Exchequer when I meet him on 13 March, and in that regard, I refer the Deputy to my press statement of 23 February.
Meanwhile my colleague, the Minister for Public Enterprise, continues to press the issue with her Transport colleagues.
