Vol. 488 No. 4

Written Answers - Constitutional Referenda.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

262 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the plans, if any, he has to hold an abortion referendum. [6116/98]

The Government decided on 2 December 1997 to establish a Cabinet committee, under the chairmanship of my colleague, the Minister for Health and Children, to oversee the work of an interdepartmental working group which is preparing a green paper on the issue of abortion. This process will involve consideration of the constitutional, legal, medical, moral, ethical and social issues which arise regarding abortion. It is the Government's intention to refer the green paper, when completed, to the All-Party Committee on the Constitution.

Any recommendations for change by the All-Party Committee on the Constitution would be an important part of the basis of any question that would be put to the people in a referendum.
