Vol. 488 No. 4

Written Answers - Teaching Qualifications.

Richard Bruton

Ceist:

299 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science if it is a requirement for EU nationals who have a degree and a HDip to pass the Irish oral examination in order to teach French or German. [6104/98]

I recently announced certain changes in relation to the Irish requirement for second level teaching.

With effect from the first day of the current school year, the ceard teastas Gaeilge (oral) of the Department of Education and Science or an equivalent qualification recognised by the Minister is required to satisfy the Irish requirement for appointment to a teaching position in a second level school.

An applicant, who does not satisfy the Irish requirement at the time of appointment, may be appointed provisionally to a teaching position subject to his-her obtaining the ceard teastas (oral) or equivalent qualification within a period of three years.

The Irish requirement applies to all applicants irrespective of their nationality or the subjects being taught.
