Vol. 488 No. 4

Written Answers - Recycled Products.

David Stanton

Ceist:

48 Mr. Stanton asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the arrangements, if any, in place in her Department and in any State agency or body under her control to encourage or enforce the reuse or recycling of paper and, in particular, of envelopes; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [6164/98]

In sourcing its overall paper needs for printing and general use, my Department ensures that a proportion of this requirement is fulfilled by the purchase and use of recycled paper. Staff are encouraged to reuse and recycle paper where possible. In addition, my Department sends a considerable quantity of waste paper for recycling by specialist firms. In relation to envelopes, all general purpose envelopes purchased have a very high recycled content. Envelopes used for internal distribution throughout the Department are specifically designed for long-term reuse.

As regards the agencies under the aegis of my Department, this would be a day to day matter for those bodies and one in which I have no function.
