Vol. 488 No. 4

Written Answers - Recycled Products.

David Stanton

Ceist:

53 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the arrangements, if any, in place in his Department and in any State agency or body under his control to encourage or enforce the reuse or recycling of paper and, in particular, of envelopes; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6165/98]

The Department for the Marine and Natural Resources has in operation a long standing procedure for the internal re-using of documents e.g. paper and envelopes in circumstances such as redirection of mail, the transmission of notices, minutes, and documents both within the Department's headquarters and to its outlying offices.

The Department endeavours to make use of headed paper and stationery, stocks of which may otherwise have become obsolete resulting from a change of ministerial responsibility or the changing of a Department name. In any such situations, this obsolete stock is used for internal communication purposes.

New envelopes purchased by the Department are made from 70 per cent recycled material.

The Department for the Marine and Natural Resources encourages the use of e mail where possible.
