89 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the reason officials of his Department assigned to cattle marts and sales yards are not present at cattle check-in points to oversee inward movement of all animals and ensure regulations governing health and movement of animals are fully complied with. Under the Livestock Marts Regulations, 1968 (S. I. No. 251 of 1968), it is the responsibility of the marts to ensure that livestock required by or under the Diseases of Animals Act, 1966, to be accompanied at the time of sale by a specified document are not accepted for sale at the mart unless the required document is produced by the owner of the livestock to the licensee of the mart at the time of such acceptance. Officials of my Department are routinely present at livestock marts to monitor the implementation of animal health and livestock mart regulations.
