I propose to take Questions Nos. 19, 40, 75, 97, 103, 106, 125 and 127 together.

I would like to distinguish between those asylum seekers whose cases fall to be decided by another State under the Dublin convention and who, therefore, do not have access to the asylum determination procedures here, and those persons who have had their application for asylum refused and are then dealt with under the normal immigration regulations. I have set out the information requested in the following tabular statement. It has been the policy of successive Ministers not to reveal the country of origin of asylum seekers.

Number

Persons deported under the Dublin Convention arrangements since 1.1.1998

8

Persons given notice of deportation under the Dublin Convention arrangement since 1.1.1998

17 (which includes the 8 persons deported)

Persons refused asylum and deported since 1.1.1998

Nil

Persons refused asylum and given notice of deportation since 1.1.1998

10

I also refer the Deputy to my contribution on Second Stage of the Asylum Seekers (Regularisation of Status) (No. 2) Bill, 1998, on 10 March 1998.
