Vol. 488 No. 7

Written Answers. - Grant Applications.

Pat Carey

Ceist:

311 Mr. P. Carey asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs whether he has received an application from Support, Finglas, Dublin 11, for funding to help it develop the concept of the university of the third age; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7179/98]

My Department has not received an application for funding under the 1998 grants schemes operated by my Department from the group in question. The closing date for receipt of completed applications was 12 March 1998.

The grant schemes of the Department of Social, Community and Family Affairs concentrate on support for local self-help groups, community development, welfare rights and information work. Grants are not available from the Department of Social, Community and Family Affairs towards services or initiatives which come within the remit of other statutory agencies.

The Department of Education and Science has a specific responsibility for educational initiatives while the Department of Health and children is responsible in the area of provision of social and recreational services for the elderly.
