Vol. 489 No. 3

Written Answers. - Physical Education Facilities.

Gay Mitchell

Ceist:

292 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of PE halls constructed by his Department in each of the past ten years. [8178/98]

In general terms, it is the policy of my Department to provide PE halls as part of the schedule of accommodation for all new post-primary schools. PE halls are also provided when a major extension to a school which does not have such a facility is being built. In addition, my Department has a programme for providing PE halls as stand-alone projects at post-primary schools which do not already have this facility and it is anticipated that a number of such projects will proceed to construction during 1998.

The information sought by the Deputy in respect of the total number of projects is not readily available and I cannot justify assigning scarce staff resources towards its compilation. However, if the Deputy has a query about an individual project, I will be happy to provide the details.

Ceist:

293 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of PE halls being planned by his Department; and the stage of development of each. [8179/98]

It is the policy of my Department to provide PE halls as part of the schedule of accommodation for all new post-primary schools. PE halls are also provided when a major extension to a school which does not have such a facility is being built.

In addition, my Department has a programme for providing PE halls as stand-alone projects. At present, 16 such projects are at various stages of architectural planning from preliminary site report to bills of quantity stage. It is intended that a number of these will proceed to construction during 1998 as resources permit.
