Vol. 490 No. 4

Written Answers. - Palliative Care.

Michael Ferris

Ceist:

53 Mr. Ferris asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will report on the progress to date on the development of a national hospice plan; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10247/98]

Palliative care services are being developed as part of the national cancer strategy. In 1998 approximately £2.4 million has been provided for the development of palliative care services, including the appointment of additional consultant physicians in palliative medicine and the provision of additional support staff and equipment in various hospice services. In addition, a national cancer forum has been established to provide a focal point for communication and co-ordination of services. The forum will advise on the development of palliative care services nationally, in particular on the key issues of personnel and training in palliative care.
