Vol. 490 No. 5

Written Answers. - Motor Taxation.

Donal Carey

Ceist:

22 Mr. D. Carey asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if his departmental officials are examining green motor taxation measures in advance of the budget; and, if so, if they are actively seeking submissions from interested groups for consideration. [10514/98]

The formulation of fiscal proposals for consideration by Government in the budget context is primarily a matter for the Minister for Finance.

As part of the preparation for recent budgets, an ad hoc environmental taxation group, chaired by the Department of Finance and involving representatives of a number of Departments, including my Department, has been examining the potential which may exist to use fiscal instruments to achieve environmental objectives. It is intended that this examination will continue with a view to developing policy, and practical proposals for ongoing budgetary assessment, on environmental taxation, including motor taxation.

The group met SIMI as part of its recent deliberations.
