GDP is the value of goods and services produced. It is measured by means of the income arising from the production of these goods and services, for example, profits, wages and salaries, etc. For purposes of comparison with other countries and with the EU average GDPs in nominal currencies are converted to purchasing power standards.
Regional accounts in Ireland are compiled by distributing the published state levels of GDP to the regions where the goods and services are produced. A range of statistical data relating to the different sectors of the economy which are available at regional level are used in this process. These include the annual census of industrial production, annual agricultural surveys, the Labour Force Survey and periodic censuses of services. Administrative data on public service incomes in the regions are also used in the process.
A full description of the methodology used is provided in Regional Accounts 1991 (Pn 3232) published by the CSO in November 1996.
