Ceist:450 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of people participating in Youthreach projects; the average payment to these participants; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12088/98]

At present there are 3,975 participant places on the Youthreach programme in FÁS and VEC centres, and a further expansion of 2,790 places is under way, which will bring the total to 6,765.
The average cost per student per year for training, travel and meal allowances is £1,830 in 1998, and the average overall full year cost per Youthreach place, including pay, non-pay and trainee allowance, is £6,679 per student at present.
