Vol. 491 No. 4

Written Answers. - Foyle Fisheries Commission.

Cecilia Keaveney

Ceist:

52 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the position in relation to the Foyle Fishery Commission (details supplied). [12518/98]

I have taken up the Deputy's concerns with the Foyle Fisheries Commission about the 48 hour salmon netting suspension introduced for 24 and 25 July 1996. The Commission has advised that the closure in question was introduced in consultation with the Drift Netsmen's Representatives themselves. The 48 hour closure period of Wednesday and Thursday, 24 and 25 July was introduced at the fishermens request in preference to the alternative of Thursday, 25 July and Monday, 29 July, on the basis that Mondays are seen by the fishermen to be a prime fishing day following the normal weekend closure. As a result of these discussions the advance notice of the closure issued on Tuesday, 23 July was 16 hours as opposed to the regulation 24 hours.
