Vol. 493 No. 3

Written Answers. - Leaving Certificate Examination.

Richard Bruton

Ceist:

462 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of schools, specialist teachers and pupils taking each of the leaving certificate applied and vocational options; and the number of in-service hours taken by teachers since the inception of these programmes in the curricular context of each of these programmes. [16033/98]

In the 1997-98 school-year 22,145 pupils studied for the leaving certificate vocational programme in a total of 405 schools. A total of 5,567 pupils studied for the leaving certificate applied in 164 schools-centres.

The number of in-service hours received by the teachers involved in the leaving certificate vocational programme since its inception up to the end of 1997, the latest time for which data are available, was 76,880; the number of hours received by the teachers involved in the leaving certificate applied from its inception to the same time was 37,340.

An additional 0.25 of a teaching post is allocated to schools in respect of each group of 20 students participating on these programmes. Details of the numbers of teachers involved in the teaching of the programmes are not readily available.
