Vol. 494 No. 3

Written Answers - School Transport.

John Perry

Ceist:

262 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Education and Science if school transport will be granted to persons (details supplied) in County Sligo in view of the fact that they have two young children and are under financial pressure; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18202/98]

To be eligible for transport under the terms of the post-primary school transport scheme, pupils must live at least three miles from, and be attending, the post-primary school which caters for their catchment area. Pupils who are attending their appropriate school, but are ineligible on distance grounds, may be allowed concessionary transport at £40 per term, provided there is accommodation available after all fully eligible children have been catered for, and no extra State cost is involved. As the family to whom the Deputy refers reside 2.6 miles from the school in question, the most that may be offered is concessionary fare paying transport, subject to the above conditions. I understand that there is accommodation available on this service.
