Vol. 494 No. 3

Written Answers - Defence Forces Supplies.

Jim O'Keeffe

Ceist:

107 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Defence the country of origin of the meat and poultry products being supplied to the army. [17840/98]

For 1998 all meat and poultry products supplied to military barracks are sourced in this State with the following exceptions approximately half of the bacon and pork contracts were placed with Northern Ireland firms and are sourced from that jurisdiction; approximately half of the chicken and turkey supplied under contracts placed with Irish firms are sourced from France and Northern Ireland, respectively; and approximately one third of sausage and pudding requirements are supplied by a Northern Ireland firm and are sourced from that jurisdiction.

Meat and poultry products sourced outside the State must comply with all relevant European legislation in relation to the supply of such products.
