Vol. 495 No. 1

Written Answers. - National Museum.

Richard Bruton

Ceist:

351 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands if her attention has been drawn to the fact that the 1916 Roll of Honour is no longer on display at the National Museum; and the plans, if any she has to restore it in facsimile form and to produce a booklet outlining the events of 1916, the names of the garrisons and the names of the participants as has been recommended to her Department. [19576/98]

The 1916 Roll of Honour was on display for over 30 years as part of the 1916 Room exhibition in the National Museum. However, because of the danger of deterioration of the paper, the Museum decided to take the roll of honour off public display some years ago to ensure its preservation. The roll can still be viewed by the public by special prior arrangement.

I understand that the National Museum will be pleased to make a facsimile of the roll if this proves technically feasible once conservation of the roll has been completed with a view to integrating the facsimile into a public display in an appropriate context.

While the museum has published a booklet on the 1916 period, it is also actively pursuing the feasibility of a publication focused on the names of the garrisons and the names of the participants.
