The following Table 1 lists (a) the sites entered on the Register of National Monuments and (b) Preservation Orders made under the provisions of the National Monuments Acts 1930 to 1994, since my appointment as Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands. Broadly speaking, such individual registrations and the making of preservation orders take place where it appears to me that the sites in question may be at risk.
In addition, specifically in accordance with section 12 of the National Monuments (Amendment) Act, 1994 and regulations made on 14 November 1994, entitled the National Monuments (Exhibition of Record of Monuments) Regulations, 1994 (S. I. No. 341 of 1994), I am obliged to establish a statutory "Record of Monuments and Places" which affords legal protection to all known or suspected sites and monuments.
The record consists of a set of constraint maps with an accompanying index, prepared on a county basis, which shows the locations of "Monuments and Places" which are protected under the Acts. In order to give effect to these provisions a "Record of Monuments and Places" has been established for 25 counties and is available for inspection by members of the public at various venues, mainly local authority offices, county libraries, farm development offices and Teagasc offices during normal public opening hours.
