Written Answers. - National Crime Forum.
As the Deputy is probably aware, I have said in the House before that the preparatory process to the publication of a Government White Paper on crime policy requires the consideration of structured, broadly-based and well-informed public discussion on crime issues. As part of the process, I established a National Crime Forum earlier this year.
The establishment of the forum was a significant initiative and an important step in seeking the views of the public on the future direction of crime policy. The forum held public sessions on 12 days and has met a number of times in closed session.
I have also signalled my intention to establish a crime council as a standing forum to facilitate continuing informed public debate and consultation on the subject of crime. I consider it right that the details of the council should be open to discussion and I have asked the National Crime Forum to outline what it considers to be the necessary requirements. The initiatives as outlined above will facilitate the development of a comprehensive policy for tackling crime in a measured and balanced way.
The report of the proceedings of the forum are at an advanced stage and I expect the report of the forum will be published shortly.
