Vol. 495 No. 4

Written Answers. - Crime Prevention.

Ceist:

348 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform his views on a document (details supplied) published recently; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20563/98]

The report referred to by the Deputy has only recently been brought to my attention. I have not as yet had an opportunity to consider the report in detail. However, it is my understanding that the purpose of this report was to identify from the available research evidence interventions that are likely to be effective in reducing crime.

The report concentrates on measures to reduce criminality, local initiatives as regards crime prevention, reducing the opportunities for crime, community crime prevention, effective policing, sentencing policy, interventions with offenders and drug users. The report makes a number of interesting findings in seeking to identify a coherent and co-ordinated strategy to reduce crime. I am of course willing to consider these findings and accordingly, I have asked my officials to examine the report with a view to considering those measures most likely to be effective if implemented here.
