Vol. 495 No. 7

Written Answers. - Deer Farming.

Mary Coughlan

Ceist:

248 Miss Coughlan asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if his attention has been drawn to the serious problems faced by deer farmers who are unable to obtain markets for venison; if he will ensure that Bord Bia will provide financial assistance to support the marketing of the industry; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21206/98]

I am aware that in common with other sectors of the meat industry at present, the venison industry is finding the current market situation difficult. Last May I sanctioned an award of substantial grant aid under INTERREG, involving both Exchequer and EU funds, to enable one sector of the venison industry develop a business and market strategy. I believe that this funding will be of considerable assistance in the improvement of marketing opportunities for the entire sector. Finding and building up market outlets is a gradual and continuous process.

An Bord Bia has responsibility for the promotion of venison and the precise level of support within its overall allocation to be used for the marketing of venison is a matter for its board.
