Vol. 495 No. 7

Written Answers. - Housing Grants.

Ulick Burke

Ceist:

500 Mr. U. Burke asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if a grant will be paid to upgrade the 52 mining houses in Loughrea, County Galway, which are in need of reconstruction, in order to keep this valuable housing resource in a reasonable state of repair and replace the flat roof style which is in a poor condition; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21377/98]

I have no proposals, at this stage, to reintroduce a general house improvement grant scheme or a grant scheme directed at upgrading houses constructed in specific locations for the accommodation of certain categories of workers.

I am, however, in the context of the Government's An Action Programme for the Millennium, examining, on an ongoing basis, possible options to extend the range of measures currently available to assist individual low income households to carry out necessary improvement works to their housing.
