Vol. 495 No. 7

Written Answers. - Flood Relief.

Pádraic McCormack

Ceist:

499 Mr. McCormack asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will make provision of a special grant for the raising of a coastal road at Mweelon, Maree, Oranmore, County Galway, in view of the fact that floods at high tide cuts off nine families from the mainland; if he will make a grant available to Galway County Council for raising this road; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21363/98]

The maintenance and improvement of non-national roads in their area is a matter for Galway County Council, to be funded from their own resources, supplemented by State grants. Galway County Council were allocated a total of £12.230 million in non-national roads grants in 1998, an increase of over 17 per cent on the corresponding payment figure for 1997. Apart from this allocation, which is intended to provide for the special and ongoing needs of Galway County Council, there are no funds at the disposal of my Department from which a further non-national road grant could be made available to the council.
