Vol. 495 No. 7

Written Answers. - Home-School Liaison Scheme.

Richard Bruton

Ceist:

663 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of home school community liaison teachers in place at primary and secondary level; the number of additional appointments necessary to provide a home school community liaison teacher in each primary and secondary school designated as disadvantaged; and the criteria or points system used for ranking schools in respect of their priority to obtain the services of a home school community liaison teacher. [21015/98]

There are currently 133 home school community liaison co-ordinators in place at primary level and a further 84 at second level. The co-ordinators in question currently serve a total of 225 primary schools and 85 second level schools.

There are 93 primary schools and 126 second level schools which have disadvantaged status and are not currently included in the home school community liaison scheme.

It is estimated that the equivalent of 103 additional teacher appointments would be required to extend the service to all first and second level schools with disadvantaged status. It should be noted that some of the smaller primary schools involved could be quite adequately catered for on the basis of sharing a co-ordinator with an adjacent school.

Primary schools are selected for inclusion in the home school community liaison scheme on the basis of priority of need as reflected in the concentrations of disadvantaged children attending the schools. In inviting second level schools to join the scheme, priority is given to schools which receive pupils from primary schools which are already in the scheme.
