Vol. 495 No. 7

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Gerry Reynolds

Ceist:

714 Mr. G. Reynolds asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason a person (details supplied) in County Leitrim will not receive school transportation from his home. [21433/98]

Special transport arrangements on medical grounds may only be considered where pupils are attending their appropriate post-primary centre.

Eligible pupils who choose to attend a post-primary school outside of their home centre may be allowed transport from the nearest pick-up point within the catchment area of the centre attended. This is subject to spare seats being available, and no extra State cost being involved.

The pupil to whom the Deputy refers is attending a school outside of his home centre, and is availing of catchment boundary transport. In the circumstances, I regret that it is not open to my Department to sanction an extension of the service through an adjoining catchment area, as this would be contrary to the terms of the scheme.

Accordingly, I regret that the present transport arrangement is the most that can be offered.
