Vol. 495 No. 7

Written Answers. - Milk Sales.

Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

114 Mr. Sargent asked the Taoiseach the annual household market for liquid milk by volume; and the number of individually packaged retail units per annum used by the retail liquid milk sector. [21341/98]

The total milk sold for human consumption in 1997 was 533 million litres. This was composed of 440.2 million litres of whole milk sales and 92.8 million litres of skimmed and semi-skimmed milk sales.

The usage of this milk by packaging is not available.

Thomas P. Broughan

Ceist:

115 Mr. Broughan asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the way in which she will support the Take Time Out for Safety initiative launched by the trade union movement recently. [21010/98]

The Take Time Out for Safety initiative was aimed at encouraging every building site in Ireland to spend at least one hour during safety week on shared activities designed to improve safety and heighten safety awareness. The initiative was launched jointly by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions and the Construction Industry Federation and was organised as part of the European Week of Health and Safety which ran from 19 to 24 October 1998.

The joint activities recommended as part of this initiative, such as consultation, the revision of safety statements and the selection of safety representatives, are all activities which have both my full support and that of the Health and Safety Authority, which is the State body with responsibility for the enforcement of occupational health and safety legislation. They are also activities which help to reinforce the importance of a partnership approach to the management of workplace health and safety.
