Vol. 496 No. 3

Written Answers. - Nuclear Waste.

Brian O'Shea

Ceist:

73 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the position in relation to the shipment of nuclear waste from Germany to Sellafield; the contact, if any, she has made with the German Government in this regard; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [22668/98]

I refer to my response to Question No. 101 on 20 October 1998.

As I stated in my reply to that question, all shipments of nuclear waste from Germany were suspended in May last at the direction of the German Government. I understand from the Department of Foreign Affairs, which is continuing to monitor the situation, that there is no change in this position. Indeed, following the recent general election in Germany I understand that nuclear legislation in Germany is to be changed as a prioity and that nuclear energy will no longer be an objective of the German Government.
