Vol. 496 No. 7

Written Answers. - Bovine Disease Controls.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

124 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if the companies taking animal offal to the rendering plant in Cavan are complying with health and BSE regulations; the number of checks carried out in the past 12 months; and the companies on which these checks have been carried out. [24022/98]

Individuals or companies who wish to haul specified risk material to the dedicated rendering plant in Cavan must be licensed under the Diseases of Animals (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy) (Specified Risk Material) Order, 1997 (S. I. No. 80 of 1997). At present 63 such licenses are in operation.

Regular checks are carried out on these hauliers to ensure compliance with the provisions of the order.
