Vol. 497 No. 5

Written Answers - Education Services.

Richard Bruton

Ceist:

365 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science if his Department will carry out an audit of the non-mainstream educational supports available with a view to providing formal recognition, central co-ordination and support for their efforts. [25692/98]

The recently published Green Paper on adult education provides a comprehensive profile of the current adult education and training provision available in Ireland and also highlights the key issues which will impact on future policy. The paper identifies the key stakeholders in adult education and proposes to include all of them in developing a comprehensive and integrated approach to the future of adult education. The paper proposes the establishment of a national adult learning council, and of local adult learning boards to ensure a co-ordinated and integraged approach within a coherent policy framework.

In relation to the youth services, heads of a Bill for a revised youth service Act will be submitted to Government very shortly. The aim of the new legislation is to provide for a co-ordinated service at local level via the vocational education committees.
