Vol. 497 No. 6

Written Answers - Schools Building Projects.

Olivia Mitchell

Ceist:

240 Ms O. Mitchell asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will respond positively and urgently to the request from the Sandyford parish for the provision of a new national school to serve the new and rapidly expanding population in this growth area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26038/98]

A request to initiate the process to provide a new primary school in Sandyford parish was recently received in my Department. The letter indicated that existing schools would be unable to meet the demand for pupil places in the medium and longer-term.

The planning section of my Department has commenced an examination to confirm the need for a new school, the appropriate size and required opening date. I have asked that the examination be concluded as soon as possible.

The planning section will be in contact with the local interests during the course of the examination.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

241 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will provide additional funding for Gairm Scoil Chú Uladh, Béal an Átha Móir, An Clochán, Contae Dhún Na nGall, to provide facilities including a computer room, three general classrooms, enhanced toilet and cloakroom facilities for students and teachers, changing rooms and showers for students, an office and an adequate staff room; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26039/98]

My Department has recently received an application from County Donegal Vocational Education Committee for additional accommodation at Ghairmscoil Chú Uladh, Béal an Átha Móir.

This application is currently being examined in terms of enrolment, future viability and cost implications.

The question of funding will be considered when the project has successfully completed all stages of architectural design.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

243 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will reduce or abolish the local contribution rate of 15 per cent on all building projects for primary schools. [26057/98]

At present, the standard rate of local contribution to capital projects at primary level is 15 per cent. The local contribution requirement developed in what is largely a private system of primary education which operates with State aid.

I have signalled my intention to introduce a new initiative on school ownership at primary and post-primary levels and, in that context, I am examining the level of local contribution that will apply in respect of future projects at both levels. Significant work has been completed on the initiative and, as soon as the work is finalised, I will make an announcement.
