Vol. 498 No. 1

Written Answers. - Schools Amalgamation.

Brian O'Shea

Ceist:

374 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education and Science the plans, if any, he has in relation to the proposed amalgamation of Maria Immaculata secondary school, Dunmanway, County Cork and Coláiste Chairbre; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26534/98]

My Department considers that the future educational needs of the pupils in the Dunmanway area would best be met by the development of a single post-primary school. To that end, discussions have been held over the last few years with the authorities of the two existing schools, County Cork VEC and the Daughters of Charity. The indications are that the provision of a single school in Dunmanway would have general acceptance locally.

Issues remaining to be resolved include the location of the proposed school and the type of management it should have. Discussions are ongoing between my Department, the VEC and the Daughters of Charity with a view to identifying the most suitable site for the school. The question of type of management will be finalised when the site issue is clarified.
